Not That I'm BitterBitterness is Sweet Giant Van LinesSo I moved recently, and since I have a lot of heavy furniture and very few burly friends, I decided to hire a moving company to help with the stuff I couldn't get on my own. I shopped around for the place with the lowest rate I could find, and in the end I chose Giant Van Lines. On moving day, I was stressed to all hell. Being charged by the hour, I was anxious that everything go smoothly, and I wasn't at all sure that it would. I had trouble getting the freight elevator (which I had reserved weeks in advance), not all my stuff was packed properly, there were concerns about things fitting where I wanted them to go...but in the end, it all got done in a reasonable amount of time. They charged me for about half an hour more than they really worked, but I figured, whatever. I had been prepared for the charge to be up to $500, so $413 wasn't as bad as it could have been. Honestly, I was just glad it was over. Of course, I was wrong. I got my credit card statement, and to my extreme dismay I found that Giant Van Lines had charged me TWICE for my move. So instead of $413 appearing once on my credit card statement, it appeared twice, and suddenly my move was costing me OVER EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS. I instantly called Giant Van Lines to inform them of their error, thinking they would realize their mistake and fix it. Ah, how foolish I was. They told me they had no record of the transaction, and they wouldn't be able to refund it to me unless I faxed them a copy of my credit card statement. What. The. FUCK? You don't have a record of the transaction? Are you telling me you don't have any accountants? Do you instantly convert all your income to cash and throw away your recipts? Is your allegedly "company" just a bunch of foreign guys with a truck and a pile of cash sitting in a dirty parking lot? HOW can you possibly not have a record of all your credit card transactions? And HOW do you not notice having $413 more than you should? Oh, and I'm pretty sure that you demanding to see my credit card statement before you'll give me my money back is illegal. No WAY am I sending that to you, assholes. So I called my credit card company, and their automated system caught the double transaction and told me it would be taken care of in five days. Five days later, it wasn't, and I called in again. Turns out that it wasn't technically a double transaction because the second one had a different order number. So they didn't just hit a button twice by accident, they actually charged my credit card two entirely separate times. Real professional there, dipshits. Anyway, that meant that the nature of my complaint got changed from "double transaction" to "unauthorized transaction," and for that they needed my signature and a copy of my receipt. While looking for my receipt, I found some other stuff mixed in with all the various papers they'd had me sign that day. One of them, to my horror, was a paper stating that if I had any issues with them charging my credit card, that I wouldn't go through my credit card company to resolve it and would instead go directly to them. Excuse me? This kind of shit makes me think they do this sort of thing on a regular basis. I mean, why else would they need me to sign a paper that says "If we screw you over, don't try and fix it! Just ask us nicely, and we'll seriously consider giving you your money back in a couple of months if you hand over your private financial information!" Can you say shady? I crossed my fingers and hoped that having me sign something like that was more intimidation than anything else, since once again, I'm pretty sure that they can't do that. Just trying to scare us into not doing the one thing that might actually help. And it turns out I was probably right about that, since as of today I have my money back. Sorry, assholes, no more pretending you can't find my money. If I ever need to move again, I'm hauling every last piece of furniture myself it fucking kills me.
